Dining Table Height

Often when choosing a dining table, its height tends to be overlooked yet it holds equal significance to the size of the tabletop. Standard dining table height in North America is around 30" tall but the most important measurement is actually the space from the top of the chair seat to the underside of the table (see image below). This should be at least 7.5” to allow your thighs to fit under the table comfortably with some room to spare.

What Shape Table Is Best for Small Spaces?

For small spaces, a round dining table is often the best choice, yet the other shapes also have their advantages. Here is a list of common dining table shapes with their pros and cons.

Round Dining Table Pros

✅ Flexible seating: It’s flexible with the number of people it can accommodate. Round tables lack the strict "one person per side" limitation of square or rectangular tables so you can squeeze in an extra person or two when needed.

✅ Space efficient: Without corners it's easier to move around in a tight space. Also the table itself might fit into a smaller space.

✅ Illusion of Space: A round table can make the room seem larger due to its even distribution of space around it.

Round Dining Table Cons

🚫 Seating Limitations: Although a round table can allow for flexible seating, it could provide fewer formal spots than a rectangular or square table of similar size. This could be a downside if you frequently host large gatherings.

🚫 Mismatch with Room Shape: If your room is rectangular, a round table might not make the most efficient use of space. In such cases, a square or rectangular table could be more space-efficient.

🚫 Price: Round tables are often more expensive than rectangular or square due to the amount of material needed and extra labour required to build them.

🚫 Lack of Surface Area: for example, a 48” diameter circular table will have 27.3% less surface area than a 48”x48” square table due to the lack of corners.

Square Dining Table Pros

✅ Efficient Corner Use: Square tables can be placed in a corner when not in use, maximizing floor space in a small room.

✅ Ideal for Square Rooms: A square table fits well in square rooms, making the most of the available space while maintaining balance and symmetry.

✅ More surface area: A square table has 27.3% more surface area than a circular table of the same width.

Square Dining Table Cons

🚫 Limited Seating: Square tables are typically limited to a maximum of four seats whereas a circular or rectangular table of similar size can accommodate flexible seating.

🚫 Restricted Movement: The corners of a square table can restrict movement in a small space, potentially making it difficult for people to maneuver around the table in a tight space.

Rectangular Dining Table Pros

✅ More Seating Capacity: Rectangular tables can usually accommodate more people than square or round tables of comparable size, making them a good choice if you frequently host.

✅ Versatile Placement: Rectangular tables can be placed against a wall or in a corner permanently or when not in use, freeing up floor space in the room.

✅ Flexibility in Sizes: Rectangular tables come in a wide range of lengths and widths which offers more flexibility to find a size that fits your specific space.

✅ Optimal for Narrow Spaces: In narrow rooms a rectangular table often optimizes the space while providing ample seating.

Rectangular Dining Table Cons

🚫 Less Efficient for Square Rooms: In square rooms a rectangular table might not make the most efficient use of space. A square or round table could be a better fit.

🚫 Space Requirement: While rectangular tables are great for narrow spaces, they generally require more length in the room than round or square tables of comparable seating capacity. This can make the space feel cramped.

🚫 Centre Accessibility: Depending on its size, the centre of a rectangular table might be hard to reach for those seated on the ends.
